This photo, which is from the UW Madison Manitowoc Local History Collection, was taken on June 8, 1899 at an annual school picnic of the “French Settlement” or La Salle school, southwest of Mishicot on Samz Rd. Forty-seven kids were served by one teacher. Thirty-three years later, the photo was republished in the Manitowoc Herald newspaper, with IDs provided by Alvin Jindra, one of the boys in the photo. The picnic was held in a grove about a half mile from the school.
The IDs below have been updated to include married names. Almost all the kids came from neighboring farms. The father of the Bartelme siblings was Baltasar Bartelme, proprietor of the hotel at King’s Bridge, which burned in 1896, but was rebuilt later. Harry Terens was the son of August Terens, who built the Badger State House, the hotel and stage stop that later became a restaurant with the Badger Bowl adjacent to it. August sold the building in 1885 in exchange for a farm that was near this school.
The children of several of these farm kids later established businesses in town. Eli Baugniet is the father of Florenz Baugniet, who founded Fox Hills in 1964. Other businesses established by children of these kids included Kronforst Electric and Jindra Plumbing and Heating. Alice Jindra married the longtime Mishicot Lutheran Pastor, Ed Zell.
The rightmost slate in the photo reads “The groves were God’s first temples.”
