A portrait of a group of people, the leftmost of which is Elizabeth Puffer Smith, wife of Daniel Smith, who was the founder of the village of Mishicot.
This obituary of Elizabeth was published in the Manitowoc Pilot on April 23, 1880:
“Gone to Rest”
We’re sorry to be obliged to announce the death of another old resident of the county. Mrs. Daniel Smith of Mishicott, died yesterday forenoon after weeks of wasting sickness. She had just reached the ripe old age of four score years when death summoned her to join her beloved companion of former years, whose ashes have for many years rested beneath the sod, and obeyed the summon willingly, passing beyond the Dark River with a smile upon her aged face that will remain until dissolution has performed its effacing task.
It will be impossible for us to give anywhere near as full an obituary notice as we would like but that sad duty will perhaps be performed by someone of the many who are personal friends and acquaintances of the venerable deceased, whose knowledge of her life and sorrow over her death will give to their memorial sketch both verity and pathos.
Mrs Smith was a typical Yankee woman strong and fearless, tender and tireless -and although for years past old age has not prevented her from going about and relieve distress and soften sorrow, people have not yet forgotten that while in health she never refused to respond to any call for assistance. She was, in reality, not only one of the pioneers of the county but one of the pioneers of the West, having come here nearly fifty years ago with her husband Daniel Smith, (in after years “Uncle Dan”) when the whole country between Lake Michigan and the Fox River was an unbroken, primeval forest; when Indians and wild animals were numerous. But none of the dangers of the frontier or the dense and pathless woods kept her from mounting her pony and going to the relief of the sick or unfortunate. She leaves several sons and daughters, who are scattered far and near but who have been notified by telegraph of her death. Her funeral will probably take place on Thursday.
