A. Holst Home

Miscellaneous undated postcards and photos of the A. Holst Home at 511 E Main Street in Mishicot, Wisconsin.

This history of the home was written by Jim Sustman:

This elegant, two and half story Victorian style home, consisting of twelve rooms, belonged to Claus and Augusta Holst and was built around the turn of the century. Claus (1853-1924) and his wife, Augusta, came to Mishicot from Potter, Wisconsin, in 1880. Their home was built on Main Street, just across from Holst General Store, which they opened in 1889. In time, their two sons, Arthur A. and Hugo F. joined in the family business, which became known as A. Holst and Sons. The Holst home, a landmark in the village, was the first to use electricity with the electric power coming from the village dam.

After the death of Claus and Augusta Holst their son, Arthur, and his wife, Eva, lived together in the house until 1940, when Arthur died, after which Eva remained in the home.

Eva eventually married her second husband, George Schmidt, who was a former partner in Stelzer and Schmidt Hardware Co. in Mishicot. Eva and George Schmidt lived in the house until December of 1959, when a fire destroyed the home and caused George’s death. After the fire, the ruined house was torn down and a doctors’ clinic was built on the site, which later became the Village Hall.
